Joseph Zeballos-Roig is a policy reporter in Washington D.C. with a focus on economics. He has reported on Congress for Semafor and Business Insider, producing political and policy coverage that’s been featured in leading newspaper, TV and digital media outlets.

He reported extensively on the legislative battles around former President Biden’s domestic agenda and the decision-makers shaping it at every level. An inaugural reporter at Semafor, he broke news on tax, crypto & immigration developments in Congress and the 2024 campaign. He was first to report on private bipartisan negotiations to extend Social Security’s lifespan in the Senate and secured an exclusive interview with the first Democratic senator to publicly criticize Biden’s 2024 presidential debate performance. His coverage also extended into foreign affairs.

At Business Insider, Zeballos-Roig closely tracked and often scooped closely-held details on chaotic Capitol Hill negotiations that eventually yielded the Inflation Reduction Act. He anchored the newsroom’s coverage on Washington’s scramble to rescue the American economy during the COVID pandemic.

He is an alum of the National Press Foundation’s Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship. Zeballos-Roig has a bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from Florida State University, along with a master’s degree in Journalism and European Studies from New York University.
